Binary Measurement System

  Binary Measurement System
  Detail

This object is a measurement system that makes use of base-2 as a starting point. The sculpture consists of a cherry and maple box containing rulers from 1/32 of an inch to 32 inches. Each ruler is twice the size of the previous piece. Any object can be measured using a unique series of pieces. With the appropriate rulers one can measure anything from 1/32nd of an inch to 63 and 31/32nd inches. As in a base-2 number system, no element need be repeated to perform this task. The final measurement can be determined by either adding up the individual pieces or by using the tables provided in its accompanying volume, Combination Tables. What I have created here are tools for physically manipulating the numbers within the system. It is an open-ended system in that it allows the viewer to extend or expand the concepts presented through one's own handling of the individual elements.
