I feel that all my pieces
are meant to be seen in a very immediate and personal way. With this piece
the personal experience is paramount. By making this a small scale piece,
no more than one or two people can interact with it at any one time.
In this piece I have attempted to examine our place in our own private universe
and our relationship to the outer world. We are the center of our own universe
(the gimbal). We react to things from our own perspective. A perspective
shaped by our abilities, experiences and openness to the world (the eyelid),
however, what and how we observe is not exclusively in our control. The
world can be either revealed to or hidden from us (in this piece, the opening
or closing of the lid). The opportunities presented to us are constantly
changing. (The box can be moved and opened in a different place and context.)
In order to keep ourselves balanced and centered within, we filter our perceptions.
Opportunities may present themselves but it is up to us to open our eyes
to them.
